HOW OUR COURSES MONITOR YOUR PROGRESS

Career WebSchool’s courses utilize the personal computer to perform the functions traditionally performed by the teacher. Using Thomson CompuTaught software ("courseware"), the computer becomes essentially a one-on-one tutor. It presents the material to be learned, provides adequate explanation to insure that you understand what is being presented, and requires that you demonstrate your understanding through active participation in the learning process. More importantly, it acts as a constant monitor of what you know and don't know and uses that information to dynamically adjust the presentation to meet your needs as you learn. The result of this process is that the courseware provides a fully self-contained instructional program that can adjust to the needs of students who may vary widely both in the amount of knowledge they bring into the learning session as well as their learning ability (i.e., how quickly they learn). There are a number of specific features of the Thomson CompuTaught learning system that contribute both to its uniqueness and to its effectiveness in teaching. At a more general level, the learning process emphasizes two primary characteristics:

  • teaching to mastery and fluency
  • the dynamic control of the learning process

The overall structure of a Thomson CompuTaught course is as follows:

A. Each lesson begins with a set of stated learning objectives for the lesson.
B. At frequent intervals throughout the lesson, you must answer questions that assess the extent to which you have mastered the stated learning objectives. These questions are objective, multiple-choice questions.
C. Based on your responses, remediation is provided for items that you have not yet mastered.
D. This remediation continues until you demonstrate mastery of all items in the instructional content for the lesson.

Thus, a lesson is based on a constant comparison of actual performance against the desired performance, i.e., mastery of the content material. A lesson may not be completed until the stated learning objectives have been met. You must complete each lesson to preset criteria for mastery and fluency. Thus, the learning objectives, the structured learning process that guides your progress, and the mastery and fluency criteria collectively constitute an integrated learning system that leads you to mastery. The process is one of “teaching to mastery” rather than simply “testing for mastery” after major segments of instruction.

EXAMINATION AND GRADING POLICY

Career WebSchool offers qualifying (appraisal), pre-license (real estate) and continuing education appraisal courses. All of the qualifying and pre-license courses require an examination upon completion of the course lessons. If you fail the first exam you may schedule a second exam no sooner than the next day. Should you fail both exams, you must re-register and repeat the course from the beginning before taking the final exam again. A discounted re-enrollment fee will be charged.

Scheduling Final Exams: For students taking courses that require a final exam, all exams are proctored. Therefore, you must call (1-800-532-7649) or email Career WebSchool (appraisal@careerwebschool.com) to schedule your final exam in a proctored setting.
